With contributions from TEDU Architecture students and alumni, the THE VOID MAG team is pleased to present THE VOID MAG Issue 5 (Special Issue) to its readers in two fascicles, themed “out of order” and “malum mekân”, respectively.
The phrase [out of order] commonly appears as an error message. While it may indicate a malfunction in mechanical devices, it can also signify disorder, contradiction, or confusion. In certain contexts, it conveys meanings of inappropriateness or deviation. Situations marked as [out of order] disrupt our plans and push us beyond established systems of order. This issue investigates the oppositions and similarities between order and disorder, as well as the possibilities for new forms of order, while simultaneously questioning the coexistence of related meanings such as malfunction, decay, the loss of an existing order, or a system’s inability to respond.
[malum mekân] may be understood as spaces that do not need to be named in order to be recognized. They are spaces whose names we often avoid mentioning due to the fleeting nature of the activities experienced within them or the sense of uncanniness they produce, yet they are generally identifiable without being explicitly stated. [malum mekân] also emerge as places of habitual consumption or visitation. They can be described as in-between spaces that evoke both curiosity and unease, exist on the threshold, and resist a sense of belonging. This issue aims to explore [malum mekân], to re-construct them, and to articulate what remains unspoken. The theme questions shared yet ownerless spaces, brief encounters, and the feelings of uncanniness that accompany them.
