The year 2023, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey, offers a unique opportunity to evaluate the last century of the transformation of the physical environment in Turkey and to think about how the next 100 years can be shaped. There is undoubtedly a connection between these two perspectives: on the one hand, the social evolution of the ideal of innovative construction and planned development that accompanies the modernist development and enlightenment discourse into which the Republic was born, and on the other hand, the relationship between urban and natural environment, management of natural resources, preservation of historical texture and social and economic development. It will focus on the persistent agenda of eliminating inequality. It can be foreseen with this opportunity that the evaluation of how the urban and rural development programs of the past shaped the built and natural environment will gain renewed importance and function for envisioning a resilient, sustainable, and egalitarian future.
From another perspective, such opportunities go beyond oppositions as built environment-natural environment or urban development-preservation. It creates an environment to think about the city's history, architecture, and social production together with the past and future of the natural environment. The agenda created by the crises of the 21st century that require urgent action will invite functional criticism in our view of the hundred-year balance sheet. On the other hand, remembering the proposition that humans, as defined by Bookchin, are the embodiment of nature's evolution towards "knowingness," "intelligence, reason, and the ability to think through oneself," we can see that past manners, knowledge, and experience, with all their faults and virtues, can lead to a better understanding. The possibility of researching the future in an evolving continuum will be evident. The theme "Turkey's 100+100 Years: Ecological Notes" invites researchers to contribute to the future with research and insights into past experiences within the framework of the ecological challenges and opportunities facing Turkey. The aim is to discuss Republican Ankara and Turkey from different scales and contexts and to create a prediction for the next century. This approach will undoubtedly require the interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers from many fields, including art, design, architecture, planning, engineering, environmental studies, and sociology.
"Turkey's 100+100 Years: Ecological Notes" symposium will be open to the public and will be held in Turkish with the aim of broad participation. We welcome all participants to TED University Ahmet Ersan Conference Hall on 16-17 November.
